Job Description

Company Overview

esVolta is independently owned, and we are among the largest players in the US energy storage sector with about 1.5 GWh of projects in operation or construction, and a 20+ GWh development pipeline.

We are headquartered in Newport Beach, California, with employees in multiple regions across the U.S. Our diverse management team has many decades of experience in the renewable energy, utility, and independent power sectors. esVolta is an innovative industry leader in development, design, construction, financing, and management of utility scale energy storage projects.

At esVolta, every employee makes an impact on the company’s growth and profitability, every day. We have a fast-paced, high-performance and team-oriented culture. We value quality of life and flexibility for our employees and strive to help our team members achieve their career goals.

About The Role
We are seeking motivated and energetic candidates to join as Director of Government and Regulatory Affairs to manage esVolta’s positions, issues and relationships at FERC and NERC, policy positions at the Regional and Independent Transmission Organization ("RTO/ISO"), e.g., CAISO, ERCOT, WECC, and take the lead on identifying and developing state filings and establishing policy positions for consideration in key states, as well as monitoring federal trade, tax and tariff policies that impact our business.

This role will assist in the establishment of corporate strategies, policies and plans that align with regulations and policies in the markets where esVolta works. Additionally, the Director will identify potential policy changes or modifications that may benefit the business and communicate those to internal teams to assist in developing strategy. A key function will be maintaining and nurturing relationships at regulatory bodies and industry trade groups and their staffs, associated authorities, committees and other partner organizations. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of esVolta’s projects and growth strategy and the battery storage industry and be a capable communicator and team player.

Core Responsibilities
  • Track Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, RTO/ISO, state Public Utilities Commission (PUC), and state legislature policies that impact esVolta’s business and coordinate with appropriate functional groups within esVolta (Development, Commercial Operations, Finance, Asset Management, EPC) to ensure policy impacts to our business are understood and responded to.
  • In coordination with functional groups, manage esVolta's policy and filing priorities at FERC, NERC, the RTO/ISOs, state PUCs and other state and federal agencies, as well as select state legislatures.
  • Develop regulatory and legislative positions and strategies to promote priorities and offset potential roadblocks to development and new products.
  • Work with trade associations to further esVolta’s regulatory work.
  • Hire and manage regulatory consultants, lobbyists, or outside counsel to assist policy priorities.
  • Manage select regulatory/government affairs budgets.
  • Coordinate policy priorities, relationship management and communications with esVolta’s leadership team.
  • Develop and advise implementation of compliance with all laws and regulations for subject matter experts throughout project life cycle.
Skills & Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience in the energy sector with a preference for renewable energy or energy storage experience is required.
  • Strong experience and proven skills in understanding the regulatory process at state, RTO/ISOs, NERC and FERC, and state legislatures.
  • Exceptional analytical skills in understanding policy impacts to energy development and pricing.
  • Communication skills: ability to develop and deliver concise powerful messages verbally, in writing and in presentations.
  • Unwavering ethics and strong moral compass in all efforts.
  • Passionate about working for a company that is driving the transition to clean energy and the motivation and energy to support the achievement of our mission.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Self-starter that can excel in situations with ambiguity and evolving mandates.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with multiple internal group members across different businesses and develop creative solutions.
  • High level of intellectual curiosity and professionalism.
  • Global mindset and comfort with working with people from multiple different backgrounds and cultures.
  • Must be a team player, knowing that what we will build as a team will be better than what we would each build alone; "no task is beneath me" attitude reflecting the fast-growing nature of our battery storage sector.

The salary offered will depend on the specific skills and experience of the selected candidate. This position is also eligible to participate in our annual bonus program.
